In June 2023, Maiam nayri Wingara, the Australian Indigenous Governance Institute, and the Lowitja Institute hosted the National Indigenous Data Sovereignty Summit. Over 130 Indigenous delegates from every State and Territory were joined by international experts from Aotearoa (New Zealand), Canada, and the United States.
The Summit was an opportunity to refresh the Indigenous Data Sovereignty agenda – five years after the first Summit – and look to the future through operationalising Indigenous Data Governance. The Indigenous Data Governance Communique was one outcome of this Summit. The Communique is addressed to all individuals and entities involved in the creation, collection, access, analysis, interpretation, management, dissemination, and reuse of data and data infrastructure in Australia.
